We may have mentioned this before, but we were very excited when we received our first shipment from Isabel Marant a few weeks back for the spring season. Every spring and fall there seems to be a waiting list for at least one Isabel Marant item and more often then not, the Dicker Boot will find its way to the top of that list.

This season we were very impressed - and eager to purchase ourselves - the new colorways that we received in the Dicker Boot for spring. The look book is shot with surrounding track and field elements as the backdrop, clearly showing how comfortable and versatile the collection is sure to be this spring. Whether you want to dress it up, or go for a jog on a rainy day (see below) as the Danish brands ethos goes, the clothes are always, "created for life, good for all seasons."

Interior Design Show 2012:

You will most definitely find us at the Interior Design Show this weekend at the Metro Convention Centre taking in the sights - and more then likely stealing a few ideas and passing them off as our own - and anyone else who has some free time this weekend should check it out as well. I'm sure a good majority of us out there are getting to the point where the movie posters and street signs hanging on the walls just don't cut it anymore, and so naturally we want to broaden our horizons and mature our palette for the finer things in life(and if not, it's always good to know that there is interior design that exists outside of IKEA).

Nevertheless, if you need something to do this weekend consider checking it out (and obviously swing by the shop as well!) It will definitely be a good time. Hit the pic below for more details.

Entitled Warrior, Filler Magazine for their recent fashion shoot puts together some rather intimidating looks that is meant to be "a utilitarian wardrobe designed to serve and protect...as well as impress."

We think the shoot looks fantastic and are super impressed with the way they took some of our favorite Isabel Marant pieces from fall and gave them a bit of an edge, styled in a way that has us thinking A Midnight in Paris meets Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Oscar season is right around the corner after all). Harold Klunder: Black Sun

Opening this Thursday on January 26th at the Clint Roenisch Gallery (944 Queen St W) is the latest installment from artist Harold Klunder entitled, Black Sun. The opening of the installment kicks off at 7pm and will be on display until the end of February. We will definitely be in attendance for the launch tomorrow and anyone with an appreciation for art should check it out as well.

Here's what you need to know about the exhibition:

Black Sun is a solo show of paintings from 1986 to 2011 by Harold Klunder, the Dutch-born, Montreal-based painter widely regarded as one of Canada's most compelling. The exhibition marks the artist's fourth solo since joining the gallery when it opened in 2003. The title of the exhibition is taken from of a large, new triptych painted over the course of four years and being shown here for the first time. Also included are small, very recent paintings made over a four-month period in Brooklyn and a rare, eight-foot high oil from 1986 entitled Sacred And Profane Love (Self-Portrait I) which was last shown in New York in 1990 at the 49th Parallel.

Most of you have probably seen this by now, and if you haven't, we're kind of jealous of the feeling you will no doubt experience watching this for the first time. We are huge Wes Anderson fans here at the shop - but honestly who isn't - and after a brief sojourn from live action film, it is great to see Wes and his usual gang of actors get back to the big screen.

MAN Tradeshow:

Jackie and Nic are currently hard at work on their buying trip for the coming fall season, making sure that we're all gonna be looking fly for 2012. During the trip they swung by MAN Tradeshow, created by Nic's good friend and business partner on many ventures (think RDV Tradeshow and Surface to Air) Antoine Floch.

Selectism.com sat down with Antoine for an interview, discussing a variety of topics from the purpose and conception of the tradeshow to Antoine's take on mens fashion in Paris. This time of the year may be cold and kind of miserable, but if there is some sort of bright side to it all, it could be in all the films, lookbooks and other visual goodies that are starting to pop up telling us that spring isn't too far away.

Moonchild was new to J+O this season and we were very pleased with the response that you guys gave us and how fast the majority of their fall collection left the racks. Today, we give you a little offering from their short film entitled The Holy Mountain, which will also be the title of their entire spring collection for 2012. Food for the Soul:

J+O staffer Natalie recently did a little photshoot for the team over at lookbookcookbook.com. The website combines fashion and cooking (what more could you want) for their lookbooks, shot in a way that will have you craving the clothes just as much as the food. All of the recipes provided alongside the photos are vegan based and look absolutely delicious!

The lovely Natalie looks amazing indulging on the tasty-looking maple pecan pie while wearing one of our favorite dresses from the fall by Toronto's own Rita Liefhebber. The dress sold incredibly quick at J+O, but there are still a few pieces left from her fall collection waiting to be worn!

Coming very, very soon...

One of my favorite things in writing about Isabel Marant is that I don't even have to explain or describe what arrived, just hearing her name alone causes unrivaled excitement and anticipation. Even right now, you've probably skimmed through this entire diatribe of information, searching for the part where I tell what will be arriving in-store this week. And usually I may take offense to this, but I listen well and learn quick, and if my co-workers have taught me anything when it comes to Isabel Marant it is this: Stop talking and move out of the way.

The latter I can do no problem, but allow me to briefly interject just for a moment to let you know what will be arriving this week. We received some fantastic prints from both her runway and Etoile collection in some amazing blouses, a jumpsuit and more beautiful spring outerwear. Additionally, and this is where you may need to re-organize your schedule, the Dicker Boot has walked back into our lives! These things go quick, and that may be an understatement. J+O staffer John picked his brother up the Norse Projects Kirk Sweater this holiday season and safe to say that the man is finding some function in it. Not only was it a replica of the sweater that Kirk Douglas wore in the film The Heroes of Telemark, but it also makes for a great layering piece if and when you should decide to take up mountaineering, as exemplified by the picture below.

New to the TO shop and online, we received our first shipment from T by Alexander Wang not to long ago. I'll re-iterate momentarily what has already been mentioned about Alexander Wang on this blog and why we enjoy his collection so much: Basics done right!

The New York Times wrote an interesting article about how men are creatures of habit and how this translates to their shopping behavior. They interviewed a bunch of artists and other fashion types and they all revealed that once they found that perfect fitting item they would buy it in bulk, like that uncle of yours did during the Y2K scare.

Alexander Wang's T collection is very bulk-worthy (how's that for a compliment). If you haven't tried a shirt of his before, once you do Hanes will never be the same (no offense Michael Jordan). Not to many people spend this much time perfecting the tee-shirt, but Alexander Wang does and his hard work is definitely paying dividends in comfort and style. The spring arrivals we received are right on par with the ethos of his T collection. Great fabrics and cuts that evolve the tee-shirt from something to wear under your sweater, to being the focal point of your wardrobe. I talk way to much. But the dude is super talented! These guys have been gaining more and more steam and acclaim for their apparel collection. Once just a denim brand, they have made the full fledged dive into runway and full fashion line, and certainly seem to be doing things right. We recently received our first shipment from Rag&Bone for the fellas this coming spring, and were pleasantly unsurprised with how stellar the first shipment was (this is a good thing). Not that we would ever expect anything less from the NYC brand, but the mix of button downs, knits and sweaters had us nodding our heading in agreement, concluding that once again the British design duo is on top of their game.

Not to long ago, on their buying trip to NYC, Jackie and Nic decided to briefly detour away from all the showrooms and stop in at Barneys holiday installation "Gaga's Workshop."

Barneys converted the entire 5th floor of their flagship Madison Avenue location into a space solely dedicated to Lady Gaga's re-interpretation of Santa's Workshop. Working along side an array of other talented artists and contributors, the space takes candy canes and elves working diligently on an assembly line to a whole other level (in typical Lady Gaga fashion).

In addition to sprucing up Santa's digs, the installation also features some exclusive collaborations with designers, including J+O favorite Pamela Love. Check out the pics below to see just a tidbit of what the holiday installation has to offer. Amazing!

A few days ago, Swedish brand Acne unvelied their latest retail space in Paris, making it the second of it's kind in the French capital. The new location is really more of a studio then a shop, keeping in the tradition of Acne by creating a mulitpurpose space that can serve the creative work environment of the brand.

We are most definitely in the holiday spirit around the shop lately! With that light coating of snow we received this morning (just enough to keep us satisfied) and the prospect of presents inching closer and closer, we were feeling very elf like today and decided just for kicks we would channel our inner Santa's-Helper!

The candid conversation he shares with Nic Jones, of Surface to Air and Jackie's better half of course, serves as a great illustration behind the conceptualization of the space and the J+O approach to fashion as a whole.

Wish You Were Here is a photographic retrospective of 80's dressers from Leeds, paying tribute to friends no longer with us. The exhibition started in Leeds, invaded Dumbo in NYC and graced Paris Fashion Week. Partner at Surface to Air and lifelong Leeds fan Nic Jones, who hosted the Paris event now brings it to Jonathan+Olivia In Toronto.

Here's what Johnny Lake wrote for the NY show:

"As hip hop stormed the States the U.K. saw the emergence of it's own unique youth movement. Mods, Rockers, Hippies, Skinheads, Punks they'd all had their moment. The '80s belonged to a new breed. The Football Casual. Whereas most subcultures had their roots in a particular musical style the Casuals were obsessed with Football. And, as with most things tribal, that inevitably lead to trouble.

A collection of 60+ photographs taken by the protagonists themselves, a group of young Leeds United supporters, Wish You Were Here is a window to their world. Lovable rogues using whatever cameras they could get their hands on, documenting the times, the fashions, the friendships, the football and the fights.Wish you Were There? I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Neither should you."

For those of you haven't already heard, the beloved Black Dog Video will be closing it's doors permanently at the end of the month. Everyone here at J+O was so unbelievably saddened upon hearing this news. Black Dog Video has without doubt been our go to movie rental place for as long as we can remember and we are extremely bummed out that such a well run and well curated video store will soon cease to exist. I suppose in the digital age we currently live in, we sometimes forget how precious operations like Black dog Video truly are.

Black Dog Video is currently selling their vast collection of over 14,000 films with prices ranging from $5 to $100 for harder to find gems. This Thursday, our good friends at Nepenthes New York will be holding the opening reception for their latest gallery exhibit by Emilio Cuilan entitled, 'inimicus.' From 7-9pm located at their NYC flagship location (307 west 38th st.), Nepenthes will be showcasing the new works on their gallery space walls accompanied by music and drinks.

Additionally, they will also be opening the new pop-up shop for the Brooklyn based toy store Mini Max. The pop-up shop will feature educational, Eco-friendly toys and games so you can pick your little ones something on your next visit to the Nepenthes shop. As mentioned before, Moonchild is the invention of former April 77 stylist Pascale Koehl and is considered by many to be one of the most desirable young brands on the market today. Based in Paris, all of Moonchild's creations are hand knit by traditional Peruvian artisans. We've been watching this video at the shop for the past week or so before we realized that, oh crap, we forgot to blog about it! So my bad everyone, I should've had this one to you a lot sooner. Anyway, the video in question comes to us from The Avant/Garde Diaries, an initiative that attempts to showcase and bring attention to individuals they feel are bringing something different to the creative field.

The video below talks to Marco Velardi of Apartamento Magazine, and Our Legacy co-founder and designer Christopher Nying. The pair share their admiration for one another and how they find inspiration in each others work. One of our favorite parts of the video is how it showcases not only the creative talent behind Our Legacy, but captures the Our Legacy aesthetic; a relaxed but well dressed look achieved through great quality and attention to detail. Good friends of J+O, artists Peter Sutherland and Maia Ruth Lee will be hosting an art Exhibition tonight, November 16 from 7-10pm, at VIP gallery in NYC. The exhibition will based on their book "Imperial Valley" which was shot and published earlier this year.

Jonathan+Olivia Book Club: Just Kids

Without even a hint of sarcasm or hyperbole, everyone here at Jonathan+Olivia has literally read and fallen in love with Patti Smith's memoir Just Kids. A few J+O staffers have even claimed that it has changed their outlook on life. The book was published over a year ago and received critical acclaim and won multiple national book awards, but its release date has not stopped us from drooling over the beautifully told saga of Patti Smith and her relationship with fellow artist Robert Mapplethorpe. The book documents the artists time spent in the cultural and artistic revolution that was NYC during the 1960's and 70's. More importantly though, it is a story of unconditional love and friendship that was shared by two of the centuries most influential artists.

Just Kids in our mind is an absolute must-read, regardless of your preference in books. If you've already read the book stop by the store and feel free to discuss - believe us we will have plenty to say- and if you haven't, get to a book store or a kindle or i-Pad or wherever books can be read and purchase it, so we can start talking about it again!

The fashion shoot itself is entitled. "I'm Good, I'm Gone" and as Plaid explains the styles are, "soulful late fall looks to channel your inner diva." The photo shoot showcases a variety of designers and their collections that we carry here at Jonathan+Olivia including Alexander Wang, Isabel Marant, Pamela Love, Rita Liefhebber and Surface to Air. We were very excited to see how the finished product would look when Plaid stopped by the store to borrow some pieces for the shoot and our expectations were far surpassed! It is always inspiring to see the craft and care that goes into designing a collection. We are often only given the opportunity to see the finished product of a design that took months to perfect and so naturally we sometimes overlook the details and quality of a well made product. With videos such as the one below - documenting the work process that goes into each Bleu de Paname garment - we can begin to appreciate just how well made and well designed the Paris based brand collection truly is.

Bleu de Paname creates workwear inspired pieces all hand crafted and made in Paris, France. This fall they offer us a collection inspired by classic french workwear using classic workwear fabrics such as moleskin and gabardine. Our first shipment from Bleu de Paname is in store now with a great mix of essential fall pieces with still plenty more to come. Regardless of the fact that Jackie just so happens to be married to one of the cofounders of Surface to Air, it is the company's passion and overall creative drive that makes them a J+O favourite.

The interview also takes place in the new Surface to Air store located in NYC and shows off the new space quite well.
